Complete Exhaust Guide for Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series

Complete Exhaust Guide for Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series

The Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series Wagon is a bit of a legend in the Australian 4x4 world. It's the go to choice for people who want serious off-road capability without the compromises that come with a more road focused SUV. Whether you're crossing the Simpson Desert, running a remote station or just doing long highway miles with a heavy trailer the 76 Series is built for it.

But like most factory vehicles the exhaust system is one area where Toyota played it safe. Upgrading to a quality aftermarket exhaust is one of the most effective modifications you can make and this guide covers everything you need to know to make the right call for your 76 Series.

Why Upgrade the Exhaust on Your 76 Series Landcruiser?

The factory exhaust on the 76 Series does the job but it's not optimised for performance. Here's what a quality aftermarket system delivers:

  • Reduced backpressure — lets the engine breathe more freely under load
  • Improved torque and throttle response — especially noticeable when towing or loaded up
  • Better fuel economy — less restriction means the engine works less hard at highway speeds
  • A deeper, more satisfying exhaust note — without being antisocial
  • Superior durability — quality stainless steel outlasts the factory mild steel system  especially in coastal or outback conditions

For a vehicle that's regularly pushed hard towing, off road, long distance touring an exhaust upgrade is one of the best bang for buck modifications available.

Understanding the 76 Series Engine

The 76 Series has been powered by the 4.5L V8 twin-turbo diesel (1VD-FTV) since 2007. There are two key variants to be aware of when choosing an exhaust:

  • 2007–2016 (Pre-DPF): These models do not have a factory Diesel Particulate Filter. A full turbo-back exhaust system is the most effective upgrade.
  • 2016-On (with DPF): These models came with a factory DPF fitted to meet emissions standards. Removing or bypassing the DPF is illegal on Australian roads  so the exhaust options are different for this generation.

Knowing your build year is the single most important factor when choosing the right exhaust system.

What Exhausts systems are available for the 76 Series

At Outback Exhausts we manufacture a complete range of exhaust systems specifically engineered for the VDJ76 Wagon. Here's what's available and what each system does.

DPF-Back Exhaust — VDJ76 4.5L V8 Wagon (2016-On)

If your 76 Series was built from 2016 onwards it left the factory with a Diesel Particulate Filter. A DPF-back exhaust replaces everything from the DPF outlet back to the tailpipe. It's the legal, practical upgrade for late model 76 Series owners.

You get improved exhaust flow, a better sound, and a noticeable improvement in throttle response, all while staying fully ADR compliant. For most 2016-on owners, this is the right starting point.

Turbo-Back Exhaust — VDJ76 4.5L V8 Wagon (2016-On)

For 2016-on owners who want the most complete exhaust upgrade possible our turbo-back system replaces everything from the turbocharger outlet all the way to the tailpipe including a high flow catalytic converter. This is the full system for maximum flow and performance and pairs perfectly with a diesel tune. Please note that turbo-back systems involving DPF removal are intended for off-road use only, including applications on private property, farms, and mining sites.

Turbo-Back Exhaust — VDJ76 4.5L V8 Stainless Steel (2007–2016)

The pre-DPF 76 Series is a favourite among serious tourers and off road enthusiasts. Without the DPF complication a full turbo-back system is the most effective single exhaust upgrade you can make. Our stainless steel system is engineered specifically for the VDJ76 and built to handle whatever Australia throws at it.

DPF-Back vs. Turbo-Back: Which One Do I Need?

This is the question we get asked most often, and the answer is straightforward once you know your build year.

  • 2016-on VDJ76 (with DPF): A DPF-back exhaust is the legal, practical choice for most owners. If you're running a tune and want the full system go turbo-back with a high-flow cat. Please note that turbo-back systems involving DPF removal are intended for off-road use only, including applications on private property, farms and mining sites.
  • 2007–2016 VDJ76 (pre-DPF): A turbo-back system gives you the full benefit of improved flow from the turbo outlet all the way back this is the go-to upgrade for this generation.

What Size Exhaust Should I Run on My 76 Series?

For the 4.5L V8 1VD-FTV, a 3.5-inch (89mm) exhaust system is the recommended size. It's a meaningful step up from the factory system and provides the right balance of flow and exhaust velocity across the RPM range.

Going larger than 3.5 inches on a stock or mildly tuned engine can actually reduce low end torque by dropping exhaust velocity too much. Our systems are engineered to the correct diameter for each application — you don't need to guess.
