Best Exhaust Systems for Mitsubishi Pajero – The Complete Buyer's Guide

If you own a Mitsubishi Pajero you already know what it's capable of. Whether you're crawling through the Kimberley, towing a camper up the Great Divide or just doing the daily school run in a rig that could handle the apocalypse the Pajero is a serious machine. But if you're running a stock exhaust you're leaving performance, sound and efficiency on the table.

At Outback Exhausts, we've built exhaust systems specifically for the Pajero lineup from the old-school 2.8L 4M40 diesels right through to the modern 3.2L 4M41 common rail engines. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to choose the right system for your build.

Why Upgrade Your Pajero's Exhaust?

The factory exhaust on the Pajero is designed around noise regulations, emissions compliance and cost not outright performance. When you swap it out for a quality aftermarket system here's what you can expect:

  • More power and torque — reduced backpressure lets your turbo spool faster and breathe easier
  • Better fuel economy — a more efficient exhaust flow means your engine doesn't have to work as hard
  • Improved towing capacity — especially noticeable when you're hauling a heavy van or boat trailer
  • A proper exhaust note — deep, purposeful and unmistakably 4WD
  • Longer engine life — less heat soak and better exhaust gas evacuation

All Outback Exhausts systems come with a 5year warranty and are bolt-on as they're purpose built for your specific Pajero variant.

Understanding the Exhaust System Types

Before you buy it helps to understand what each system type actually does:

Turbo Back Exhaust

Replaces everything from the turbocharger outlet all the way to the tailpipe. This is the most comprehensive upgrade and delivers the biggest performance gains. Ideal for Pajero's that haven't had a DPF fitted from the factory (pre-2010 models in most cases).

DPF Back Exhaust

Designed for later model Pajero's fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This system replaces everything downstream of the DPF keeping your emissions compliance intact while still unlocking meaningful performance improvements.

Dump Pipe

The dump pipe (also called a front pipe or downpipe) connects the turbocharger to the rest of the exhaust system. Upgrading to a larger diameter dump pipe is often the first step in a staged exhaust build or a standalone upgrade for those who want improved turbo response without replacing the full system.

Which System Should You Choose?

Here's a quick decision guide based on your Pajero's age and setup:

  • Pre-2006 Pajero (NJ, NK, NL, NP)? Go turbo back. These older engines respond brilliantly to a full system upgrade and there's no DPF to work around.
  • NS or NT (2006–2013)? A turbo-back exhaust system is the best upgrade for your vehicle. As DPFs were not a mandatory requirement in Australia until 2015, you can fit a full turbo-back system without any compliance concerns. It offers the greatest improvement in exhaust flow, performance, and exhaust note.
  • NW or NX manufactured before 2015? A full turbo back system is the biggest performance upgrade you can make. As DPFs didn't become a mandatory requirement in Australia until 2015 you can choose this option.
  • NX (2016–2021)?For 2015-on NX models fitted with a factory DPF our DPF back systems are the ideal choice delivering improved performance.
  • Pajero Sport (2016–On)? We've got a dedicated 3.5" DPF back system for the QE/QF the largest pipe in our Pajero range.
  • Building in stages? Start with a dump pipe. It's the single biggest restriction point in the factory exhaust and delivers noticeable turbo response improvements on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a tune after fitting a new exhaust?

For most naturally aspirated or mildly modified Pajero's, a tune isn't strictly necessary after an exhaust upgrade. However, if you're combining the exhaust with other modifications (intake, intercooler, EGR work) a tune will help you extract the full benefit of the combined upgrades.

How long does installation take?

A professional exhaust shop can typically fit one of our systems in 2–4 hours depending on the vehicle's condition and the system type. Older vehicles with corroded hardware may take a little longer.

Do you ship Australia-wide?

Yes we ship to all states and territories. Most metro orders arrive within 3–5 business days. Regional and remote areas may take a little longer.

We also ship internationally if you're ordering from overseas get in touch to confirm shipping options and freight costs.

Disclaimer: The turbo back exhaust system for 2016-on models are intended strictly for off-road racing, ADF, mining vehicles, overseas models exempt from Australian Design Rules (ADR) or vehicles with valid Primary Producer exemptions. Installing this product on a 2016-on model renders the vehicle non-compliant with ADR standards for road use. It is the owner's responsibility to verify regulatory compliance before purchasing.
