Best Exhaust for Nissan Patrol GQ — What Actually Works Out There

If you own a Nissan Patrol GQ, you already know what it's built for. Whether it's crawling through the Simpson Desert, hauling a loaded camper trailer up a corrugated track or just being the most reliable thing in your driveway the GQ earns its reputation every time. But if you're still running the factory exhaust you're leaving real performance on the table.

We've been building exhausts specifically for Australian 4x4s for years, and the GQ is one of our most popular platforms. Here's an honest breakdown of what we offer, what suits your engine and why it matters.

Which Engine Does Your GQ Run?

The GQ Patrol (Y60) was sold in Australia across a pretty wide production window from 1987 through to 1997 and came with a few different engines depending on the year and spec. Getting the right exhaust starts with knowing what's under your bonnet.

4.2L TD42 — The Workhorse

The TD42 is the engine most people picture when they think GQ. It's a naturally aspirated inline-six diesel that's been around the block more times than most of us have had hot dinners. Reliable, torquey at low revs and almost impossible to kill but the factory exhaust is genuinely restrictive.

If your TD42 is turbocharged, our 3" Turbo Back Exhaust for the GQ TD42 (1991–1994) is the go to. Mandrel bent 409 stainless steel from the turbo all the way back no crushing, no restrictions just clean flow. You'll notice the difference in throttle response and EGTs almost immediately.

Running a naturally aspirated TD42? We've got you covered with our 2.5" Exhaust with Extractor for the GQ TD42 (1987–1997). The extractor is mild steel (we're honest about that it's a cost-effective choice for the N/A application) while the rest of the system is 409 stainless. Bolt-on fit, no cutting, no fabrication.

2.8L RD28 TD — The Underrated One

The RD28 turbo diesel doesn't get as much love as the TD42 but it's a solid engine  particularly in the later GQ models from 1994 to 1997. It responds well to exhaust upgrades and freeing up the exhaust flow makes a noticeable difference in how the turbo spools.

Our 3" Turbo Back Exhaust for the GQ RD28 TD (1994–1997) is built the same way as our TD42 system 409 stainless, mandrel bent, bolt-on.

Why Upgrade Your GQ Exhaust?

This isn't just about noise. A proper exhaust upgrade on a GQ Patrol delivers real measurable benefits especially if you're using it the way it was meant to be used.

Lower Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs)

High EGTs are the enemy of diesel engines particularly when you're towing or climbing. A free-flowing 3" system gets spent gases out faster which keeps temps in check and protects your engine on long, hard pulls.

Better Throttle Response

The factory exhaust on the GQ is restrictive by modern standards. Open it up and the turbo spools quicker, the engine breathes easier and the whole thing just feels more alive. It's one of those upgrades where you notice it the first time you put your foot down.

Longevity

Mild steel rusts. If you've had your GQ for a while you've probably already seen it. Our systems are built from 409 stainless steel the same grade used in quality automotive applications across the industry. It handles the heat cycles, the water crossings and the corrugated roads without corroding out on you.

Australian Engineering

Every system we make is engineered and manufactured in Australia for Australian conditions. That means the fitment is right, the materials are appropriate for our climate and you're not waiting months for something to ship from overseas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these systems fit without modification?

Yes all of our GQ exhaust systems are bolt-on. They're designed to use the factory mounting points and replace the OEM system without cutting or custom fabrication. A competent home mechanic can fit them though we always recommend a professional install if you're not confident with exhaust work.

What warranty do these systems come with?

Our stainless steel exhaust systems carry a 5 year warranty. The mild steel extractor on the TD42 N/A system carries a 1 year warranty. We're upfront about that because it's a different material with different longevity expectations.

Do I need a tune after fitting a new exhaust?

For most GQ applications a tune isn't strictly required but it's worth considering if you're combining the exhaust with other modifications like an intake or intercooler upgrade. On its own the exhaust will improve flow and you'll feel the difference, but a tune will help you extract the full benefit.

What pipe size should I choose?

For turbocharged GQ engines, 3" is the right call. It's the sweet spot for these engine sizes big enough to reduce backpressure meaningfully without going so large that you lose exhaust velocity at lower RPMs. For the naturally aspirated TD42, 2.5" is appropriate for the engine's output.

Ready to Upgrade?

The GQ Patrol deserves an exhaust that keeps up with what you ask of it. Whether you're daily driving it, overlanding or using it as a serious work vehicle. A quality stainless exhaust is one of the best investments you can make in the platform.
