Why the 100 Series Still Earns Its Place
The Toyota Landcruiser 100 Series ran from 1998 to 2007 and it remains one of the most capable and well-loved 4x4s ever built. Whether you're running the big 4.7L, V8, Petrol in the UZJ100 or the 4.2L turbo diesel in the HDJ100, these wagons were built to go anywhere and keep going. And with the right exhaust upgrade they'll do it better than ever.
At Outback Exhausts we manufacture exhaust systems specifically for each 100 Series variant right here in Australia. This guide covers what's available, what suits your engine and why an exhaust upgrade is one of the best value modifications you can make on a 100.
Understanding the Two Main 100 Series Variants
Before you start shopping it's worth knowing exactly which engine you're working with because the right exhaust system differs significantly between them.
UZJ100 — 4.7L V8 Petrol
The UZJ100 is the V8 petrol variant of the 100 Series, powered by Toyota's 2UZ-FE a smooth, torquey 4.7 litre V8 that's well regarded for its reliability and refinement. It's not a fire breather out of the box but it responds well to exhaust work. Free up the flow and you'll notice better throttle response, a deeper exhaust note and a more enjoyable drive whether you're on the highway or heading bush.
HDJ100 — 4.2L 1HD-T / 1HD-FTE Turbo Diesel
The HDJ100 is the turbo diesel variant running either the 1HD-T or the later 1HD-FTE inline six. These are serious engines strong, torquey and built for the long haul. With a turbo in the system exhaust upgrades become even more impactful. A proper turbo-back system reduces restriction, lowers exhaust gas temperatures and helps the engine breathe more freely under load. If you tow, tour or run your 100 hard this is one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can make.
Exhaust Systems We Make for the 100 Series
Every Outback Exhausts system for the 100 Series is manufactured in Australia, built to ADR compliance standards and designed to bolt straight on without modification. Here's what we offer for each variant.
UZJ100 — 4.7L V8 Petrol Systems
Extractor Headers
The factory exhaust manifold on the 2UZ-FE is a significant restriction. Outback Exhausts' Extractor Headers for the UZJ100 4.7L V8 are Australian made and available in high temperature paint, ceramic polished or ceramic black finish. They're a direct bolt-on upgrade that improves exhaust scavenging and sets the foundation for a properly flowing system. If you're serious about getting the most from your V8, start here.
Exhaust with Extractor — Full System
Want the complete package sorted in one go? Outback Exhausts' Exhaust with Extractor for the UZJ100 4.7L V8 is a full system from the extractors through to the rear including a high flow catalytic converter. It's the most comprehensive upgrade available for the V8 petrol 100 Series and the one we'd recommend if you're starting fresh.
Cat Back Exhaust
Already have extractors fitted, or just want to improve flow from the cat back? Outback Exhausts' Cat Back Exhaust for the UZJ100 4.7L V8 is available in two configurations a muffler only option for a nice refined note or a pipe-only setup if you prefer a louder more open sound. Both are 3 inch systems built for proper flow.
HDJ100 — 4.2L Turbo Diesel Systems
Turbo Back Exhaust
This is the go to upgrade for the HDJ100. Outback Exhausts' Turbo Back Exhaust for the HDJ100 1HD-T / 1HD-FTE is a full 3 inch system running from the turbo outlet all the way to the rear. It's available in three sound options large muffler for a quiet note, small muffler for a medium note or straight pipe for those who want it loud. Whichever options you choose you're getting a system that flows significantly better than factory and makes a real difference under load.

What Size Exhaust Does a 100 Series Need?
One of the most common questions we get. Here's the short answer:
- UZJ100 V8 Petrol: 3 inch is the right call for the 2UZ-FE. The V8 produces enough exhaust volume to benefit from the larger diameter without losing velocity.
- HDJ100 Turbo Diesel: 3 inch turbo-back is ideal. The turbo produces significant exhaust volume and the larger diameter helps it spool more freely and run cooler under load.
Extractors vs. Cat Back vs. Turbo Back — What's the Difference?
If you're new to exhaust upgrades the terminology can be a bit confusing. Here's a plain English breakdown:
- Extractors (headers): Replace the factory exhaust manifold. They use tuned length pipes to improve exhaust scavenging pulling spent gases out of the cylinders more efficiently. Big gains on naturally aspirated engines like the 2UZ-FE.
- Cat back: Everything from the catalytic converter to the rear of the vehicle. Improves flow on the back half of the system without touching the headers or cat.
- Turbo back: From the turbo outlet to the rear. On turbocharged engines like the HDJ100 this is the equivalent of an extractor-back as it covers the entire post turbo exhaust system.
What Real-World Difference Will I Notice?
We'll be straight with you an exhaust upgrade isn't going to transform your 100 Series into something it's not. But the real world benefits are genuine:
- Better throttle response and improved drivability
- Reduced exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) particularly important when towing or running a turbo hard
- Improved fuel efficiency in some driving conditions
- A deeper more purposeful exhaust note
- Less strain on the engine over long distances
On the HDJ100 turbo diesel the gains are more pronounced especially when combined with a tune or other supporting mods. On the UZJ100 V8 you'll notice the difference most in throttle response and sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the exhaust differ between the 1HD-T and 1HD-FTE?
Our turbo back system suits both the 1HD-T and 1HD-FTE variants of the HDJ100. If you're unsure which engine you have the 1HD-FTE was introduced in the later production run and features direct injection. Either way the same system fits and the same gains apply.
Can I fit an Outback Exhausts system myself?
Our systems are designed as direct bolt on replacements. If you're mechanically confident and have access to a hoist or jack stands fitting is straightforward. That said we always recommend having exhaust work done by a qualified mechanic to ensure correct fitment and avoid exhaust leaks.
Will an exhaust upgrade void my warranty?
Given the age of the 100 Series (1998–2007) dealer warranty is rarely a concern. Our systems are designed as direct replacements.
