If You Own a 200 Series Landcruiser, Your Exhaust Is Holding You Back
Let's be honest the factory exhaust on a Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series does the job but only just. It's designed to meet emissions targets and keep costs down not to unlock the full potential of that 4.5L V8 Twin Turbo Diesel sitting under the bonnet. If you've ever towed a heavy van up a long incline and watched your EGTs climb or felt that slight hesitation when you put your foot down on a dirt track you already know there's more in this engine than the factory setup allows.
An aftermarket exhaust system is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a 200 Series and one of the most misunderstood. This blog covers everything: what system suits your build year, the difference between turbo back and DPF back, what to expect from installation and which Outback Exhausts system is right for your rig.

What Year Is Your 200 Series? (This Matters More Than You Think)
The 200 Series Landcruiser ran from 2007 to 2021 but there's a critical split point at 2016 that changes everything about your exhaust options the introduction of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
- 2007–2015 (Pre-DPF / VDJ200): No DPF from the factory. You have the most flexibility a full turbo back system is a straightforward upgrade.
- 2016–2021 (Post-DPF / VDJ200): Factory DPF fitted. You can either retain the DPF with a DPF back system or go turbo back (off-road/exempt use only see disclaimer below).
Getting this wrong means buying the wrong system. Always confirm your build date (on the compliance plate inside the driver's door) before ordering.
Turbo-Back vs DPF-Back — What's the Difference?
This is the question we get asked most often, so let's settle it clearly.
Turbo-Back Exhaust
A turbo-back system replaces the entire exhaust from the turbo outlet all the way to the tailpipe. This gives you maximum exhaust flow improvement, the biggest reduction in back pressure and the most noticeable performance gains. On a pre-DPF 200 Series (2007–2015) this is a legal road-use upgrade. On a 2016-on model a turbo back system removes the DPF and is intended for off-road, racing, mining and not legal for road use in Australia without a specific exemption.
DPF-Back Exhaust
A DPF-back system retains your factory DPF and replaces everything downstream of it. This is the road legal upgrade path for 2016-on 200 Series owners. You still get a meaningful improvement in flow, a deeper exhaust note and better throttle response without touching the DPF or triggering compliance issues.
Bottom line: If you're on a 2007–2015 model go turbo back. If you're on a 2016-on model and driving on public roads go DPF back. If your 2016-on rig is a dedicated off roader or work vehicle with an exemption the turbo back is the performance choice.

What Performance Gains Can You Expect?
We're not going to throw around big horsepower numbers without context the gains depend on your specific setup, whether you're tuned and how you drive. But here's what you can realistically expect from an Outback Exhausts system on a 200 Series:
- Reduced back pressure: The larger 3–3.5" mandrel-bent pipework flows significantly better than the factory system letting the twin turbos spool more freely.
- Lower EGTs: Exhaust gas temperatures drop under load particularly noticeable when towing or climbing grades. This is one of the most practical benefits for touring and towing.
- Improved throttle response: The engine breathes easier and you feel it. Less lag more linear power delivery.
- Better fuel efficiency under load: When the engine isn't fighting back pressure it works more efficiently especially relevant for long highway runs with a van on the back.
- A proper exhaust note: Deep, refined and distinctly diesel. Not a raspy tin-can sound a sound that suits a premium 4x4.
Do You Need a Tune After Fitting an Exhaust?
For most DPF-back and pre DPF turbo-back installations no a tune isn't strictly required. The system will bolt on and run without one. However a quality diesel tune after fitting an exhaust will unlock significantly more of the performance benefit the ECU can be calibrated to take advantage of the improved flow rather than running factory conservative maps.
For the 2016-on turbo-back (off-road) system a tune is required. Removing the DPF changes the exhaust system enough that the ECU needs to be recalibrated to run correctly.
How Long Does Installation Take?
Our systems are bolt-on replacements using the factory mounting points no cutting no welding. A competent home mechanic with a jack, stands and basic hand tools can handle it. That said we always recommend professional installation by a qualified mechanic or exhaust specialist particularly if you're not comfortable working under a vehicle.
- DPF-Back (2016-On): 1–2 hours
- Turbo-Back (2007–2015): 2–4 hours
- Turbo-Back (2016-On, Off-Road): 2–4 hours + tune time
All kits include the necessary gaskets and hardware. Turbo gaskets are not included reuse your originals or source new ones from your Toyota dealer.
Why Australian-Made Matters for a 200 Series Exhaust
There's no shortage of cheap imported exhaust systems on the market. We're not going to pretend they don't exist. But here's the reality a 200 Series Landcruiser is a serious vehicle used in serious conditions. River crossings, corrugated outback tracks, coastal salt air, extreme heat these conditions eat through inferior materials fast.
Outback Exhausts' systems are manufactured in Australia from premium 409 stainless steel, engineered for Australian conditions and tested on Australian roads and tracks. The 5-year warranty isn't a marketing line it's a reflection of confidence in the product. When you're 600km from the nearest town you want to know your exhaust isn't going to let you down.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a turbo-back and DPF-back exhaust on a 200 Series?
A turbo-back system replaces the entire exhaust from the turbo outlet to the tailpipe, including the DPF. A DPF-back system retains the factory DPF and replaces everything after it. For 2016-on models, DPF-back is the road-legal option. Turbo-back on a 2016-on model is for off-road/exempt use only.
Which exhaust fits a 2007–2015 Landcruiser 200 Series?
The Outback Exhausts Turbo Back system for VDJ200 2007–2015 is the correct fit. These models don't have a factory DPF, so a full turbo back is the standard upgrade path.
Which exhaust fits a 2016-on Landcruiser 200 Series?
For road use, the DPF Back Exhaust for VDJ200 2016-On is the correct choice. For off-road/exempt use, the Turbo Back system for VDJ200 2016-On delivers maximum performance.
Will a 200 Series exhaust upgrade improve towing performance?
Yes reduced back pressure and lower EGTs are particularly beneficial when towing. Many 200 Series owners notice the biggest real world difference when towing a caravan or camper trailer on long grades.
Does the 200 Series Landcruiser have a DPF?
Models manufactured from 2016 onwards have a factory fitted DPF. Models from 2007–2015 (pre-facelift) do not.
Do I need a tune after fitting an exhaust to my 200 Series?
Not strictly required for DPF back or pre-DPF turbo back systems but a tune will maximise the performance benefit. A tune is required for the 2016-on turbo back (off-road) system.
Is the Outback Exhausts system louder than stock?
Yes but not excessively so. You'll get a deeper, more refined diesel note without annoying cabin drone at highway speeds. It sounds like a proper 4x4 not a modified hatchback.
